The Laws of Tzedakah and Tithing (Maaser)
The Gemara relates (Treatise Avodah Zara, p:18-19) that when Rabbi Yossi ben Kisma was ill, he asked Rabbi: "What kind of mistva have I been able to accomplish in my life so that I could have a share in the future world?
Rabbi said to him, "Did you not do a good deed?"
Rabbi Yossi reflected and then replied: "At Purim, I had confused my own pennies with those intended for the Matanot Laevyonim and, finding myself in doubt, I distributed everything to the poor".
"If it is so, exclaimed Rabbi, provided that my share is equivalent to yours and that my lot is similar to yours!"
The Mitzvah of Tzedakah has a very specific aspect that is not present in any other Mitzvah.
Indeed, each time a Jew performs a Mitzvah, it is inscribed on his forehead, then when he performs another Mitzvah, it is the second which takes the place of the previous one and so on, so so that the Mitzvah that appears on the forehead is constantly replaced by the one that was performed last.
This rule applies to all Mitzvot except for the Tzedakah, which carries an eternal stamp.
